Tanya Yajnik, MHC-Intern
About
Hello, I am Tanya Yajnik, a Mental Health Counseling Intern. I offer in-person, telehealth and hybrid sessions for individuals, couples, and families in the state of New York. My goal is to help my clients through a warm relational approach that is guided by compassion and empathy. My style is a collaborative one, in which my clients and I work towards building a safe and trustworthy space that meets their needs and allows them to feel supported and understood.
My therapeutic style is holistic and integrates several evidence-based modalities, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Feminist Therapy. After assessing the needs of the client, I focus on the combination of these therapies that feels personalized and appropriate to the clinical journey. My previous medical training in psychiatry and public health expertise allow me to approach client work with a nuanced and comprehensive view of mental health care, and I bring this understanding to my counseling practice. In addition, my background as a musician provides me with a wider tool kit and I tend to draw on somatic elements and creative, expressive approaches to healing.
I particularly enjoy working with individuals who are new to therapy, who are tentative about resuming therapy after a break, and who feel frustrated that they won’t find a clinician that would be a good fit, after several tries. I find myself drawn to working with women of color who struggle with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) or complex trauma. In the past, many of my clients have been identified as highly sensitive (HSP) or neurodivergent. As a clinician born in India and raised in Canada, several areas in the US, as well as the UK, I find great joy in exploring multiculturalism and the diasporic immigrant experience.
I am currently pursuing my Ed.M. in Mental Health Counseling and M.A. in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior, I earned an M.P.H. at the Yale School of Public Health and completed my medical training, including psychiatric clerkships, at the Texas Tech School of Medicine.
